Welcome

This is the official website of the Furness Line Community Rail Partnership which was formed in 2010 to promote a scenic, largely coastal, railway line running round the shores of Morecambe Bay, through north Lancashire and much of southern Cumbria. The trains on this route take travellers along the southern edge of the Lake District National Park. The tides of Morecambe Bay come up to the very edge of the line in places and passengers can enjoy stunning views of the second most important bay for wildlife in Britain. The bay is internationally important for its birds and the Furness Line Community Rail Partnership works closely with the Morecambe Bay Partnership to encourage local people and visitors to travel round it as sustainably as possible.

It is easy to come to this area by train. There are direct trains running from Manchester Airport right through to Barrow-in-Furness at the end of this route, or just use the West Coast Main Line to come to Lancaster and change there for local trains which run along the Furness Line. Trains from Leeds also connect to the Furness Line at Carnforth, home of the famous David Lean film, “Brief Encounter”, filmed there in 1945. The line is well connected in many ways and can even be accessed by travelling down the scenic Cumbrian Coast Line from Carlisle.
Leave the car at home or at the hotel and enjoy this area of contrasts; wide open spaces, rugged mountains, headlands and sheltered valleys – all accessible from the train.
